Step Into History: Guided Community Walk at Schaad Park
Newberg, OR – Friends of Chehalem Trails invites the community to lace up their walking shoes and explore the rich history of Schaad Park on a scenic guided walk. Join us on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Schaad Park (Eagle St., Newberg, OR) for an engaging one-mile loop walk that blends local history, nature, and community connection.
Leading this walk are Michelle Colvin and Matt Dolphin. Michelle, a former CPRD Trails Advisory Committee member, is an avid runner and dedicated community volunteer. Matt, also a past member of the Trails Advisory Committee, brings a wealth of experience from his work with trail organizations across Oregon. Together, they will share stories of the park’s history, its scenic landscape, and the ongoing efforts to maintain and expand local trails.
Established in 2013, Schaad Park was a gift to the community from Walter Robert Schaad, honoring his family’s deep roots in Newberg. The Schaad family, originally from Germany, settled in the area in the early 1900s and played a vital role in shaping the local landscape. Today, the park stands as a tribute to their legacy, offering stunning views, a nature-based playground, and restored Oak Savannah trails featuring native plant life.
This guided walk will provide participants with insights into the historical significance of the land and its evolution into a beloved community space. In addition to historical highlights, the walk will showcase the park’s unique flora and fauna, creating an immersive experience that blends education with outdoor recreation. Participants are encouraged to bring their families and friends to enjoy this enriching event.
“Trails are more than just paths through the woods—they connect people to nature, to history, and to each other,” said Matt Dolphin. “They provide a space for recreation, reflection, and community-building, and it’s important that we continue to preserve and expand them for future generations.”
Expect a mix of paved and bark-dust trails, with a gentle 100-foot elevation gain and potential muddy spots due to recent rains. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or looking for a fun and active way to connect with the community, this walk is for you!
